On the 17th February, BBC2 televised the final SKI SUNDAY of this season, from 6.15 – 7.00pm. At the 40 minute point of the programme, Martin Bell, the programme’s host, in the closing “social skiing” section, gave an honourable mention to the oldest skier still racing, and there on the screen was a beautiful picture of our very own IAN BURNS, aged 86, wearing the No. 6 bib, and racing in our Snow-Cats 49th Championship (ESF Fleche) Race in Meribel last month. (Have a look on iplayer). So it’s “Hip Hip Hooray” to our Ian, and see you again next year, when you will be 87!
Graham Bell, former British World Cup Racer, is also a Snow-Cat, having raced for us in an Austrian W.I.S.B.I. Race in St Anton in December 1991. On that occasion he beat the Base Time, much to the bewilderment of the Arlberg Ski School, who thought their timing equipment had gone on the blink! Local Pace-Maker 27.35 sec; Handicap; 7%, Base Time 25.6 sec: Graham Bell 24.55 sec. Handicap -4.5%. Ian Burns (aged only 56 then); a very creditable 30.05 sec, Handicap 17%.
